VISUAL NOVELS: I have been highly intrigued by these ever since I discovered Key animes.
AiR,
Kanon 2006, and
CLANNAD were all absolutely lovely. (Go watch them now.
) Not the H-scene kind of novel, the clean kind.
So I'm on tenterhooks for the
CLANNAD English translation project (I'll get to play all the storylines at last!), and I recently got
Narcissu, so I'm excited for that too. And the fanmade visual novel
Worlds of Haruhi Suzumiya is a gem, though it's only on YouTube and is not playable at the moment. Search for it and you'll be surprised at what dedicated fans can do! (Speaking of which, I gotta show it to my friend-who-does-not-have-a-dA.)

CLANNAD: Concerning the anime, I finished the whole danged thing in my free time, and I was just blown away. It had so much more character development than I found in AiR and Kanon, and the plot, though it took some recurring themes from previous Key animes, was surprising, touching, and altogether beautiful. It has its hilarious moments too (especially with comic relief Sunohara), and the finale nearly brought me to tears, which is more than I can say for the other two animes, really.
Character discussion: I didn't like Ryou, nor the way Kyou acted toward the tail-end of the show. I loved everyone else, especially Akio!
Tomoya, for me, seemed a lot more human compared to Yukito and Yuuichi (though I love them too), and he had personal issues and imperfections that were never stressed in those other male characters. Same goes for Sunohara; it was great that he had something of a story as compared to Jun from Kanon.
In short, I recommend the anime 100%. Please give it a try, and whip out your Kleenex packs. Also watch for
CLANNAD: After Story, the second season which will be released sometime this year. The plot is already on Wikipedia, and let me tell you, it is nothing short of amazing.
